It is so important that our bodies receive enough water each day. Our body is mostly made up of water and every part of our body needs water to function properly. For example, if you weight 100 lbs., your body will have about eight gallons of water in it. That is about 67 pounds, so 67% of your body is water.

Water is one of the most important parts of a healthy diet. But why is water so important to our bodies? Your body needs water to:

  • keep your mouth and eyes moist
  • dissolve and digest food
  • carry nutrients to cells throughout your body
  • regulate body temperature
  • lubricate joints
  • flush waste out of the body

Good things are also added to our water, such as fluoride, to help strengthen our teeth. Since 1945 the City of Fort Wayne has been putting fluoride in our water to help reduce the rate of dental decay, especially in young children. Fort Wayne City Utilities even has a water display in the McMillen Center’s Great Hall, see below, to teach youth about the importance of drinking water.
